Me and my Pirate Party friends (or think Green), scattered all over the world, want to “run ads” (post memes) aimed at affecting this or that election, might be in the UK, EU, US, China, Middle East, South America or Africa. We have our agenda and our favorite candidates. Some of us are US citizens, others not. It’s not immediately clear to me why Facebook, as an infrastructure, is obligated to give prying eyes intimate access to our network’s doings simply because we choose to join in and play the games, so long as we adhere to the codes of conduct we agreed to. Political players are entitled to a modicum of privacy. Facebook is a global platform. The same freedoms apply to all. Or, even if they don’t, the democratic ideal is that, in a free world, they should.
