My best anthro course was with a prof named Fernandez. Imee Marcos, sis of the current president of the Philippines, was my classmate. Great discussions. Small intimate group. Fernandez had a lot of experience. We were just another culture to him (earnest university students in a metropolitan world).
We zoomed through special cases at a high clip, which is part of the fun. Alcohol consumption in Japan and the USA, is it the same thing and is there such a thing as “national identity” (building that around attitudes around alcohol is ingenious). Japanese use alcohol to socialize in tightly knit work-related groups whereas the stereotypical USA drinker is probably alone watching TV and eating potato chips, then gets angry with his family cuz they’re good for nothings. Maybe more Russian in flavor? Too deep a question. Then it was on to something else… cockfights in Indonesia as I remember. The other thing though is my own background is pretty much “in the field” having had dyed in the wool world traveling explorer parents.
My thesis would be that as an outsider Austrian and philosopher on top of that, Wittgenstein was hyper aware of British ethnocentrism, including in anthropology, which he critiqued in the form of philosophical remarks.
