As a student at Princeton in the 1970s, we encouraged (through protests and publicity) our university to divest from companies supporting apartheid in South Africa. We were part of a larger global movement.

That strategy, called BDS (boycott divestment sanctions) and has been used (effectively and not) many times.

Lately, the term has been twisted to only apply (unfairly we’re told) to one specific country. The idea that Pompeo and his cronies are using BDS against Iran and Venezuela, while pushing others to do the same or face sanctions themselves, is hardly mentioned.
