Regarding Elon’s latest TED interview, I posted this to Facebook (one typo fixed):

Derek and I watched this whole Youtube in my living room on an iPad (thank you ISEPP). A standout point, a takeaway, is his admission that “driverless car” equates to “solving the real AI problem” i.e. getting human thinking patterns and reflexes on board. To me, that comes across as an admission that we’re not now and never were on the brink of a brave new driverless future in the wild, but in closed EPCOT type communities, sure. Golf courses…
Then if I heard him right he goes on to suggest “real AI” may be cracked within the year, which I’d take as the throwaway laugh line i.e. Musk being Musk, doing his comedy deadpan to the point of Asperger’s (his SNL persona).
In other words, at least Elon is conceding that we’re not on the brink of that driverless car future that Uber was hyping only recently, claiming to have a fleet ready for Pittsburgh.
Of course people suckered by Sophia by Hanson Robotics might think “real AI” (an oxymoron) is just…
